myRepono - Website Backup Service

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ >> How are mySQL database backups generated?

myRepono generates your database backups as '.sql' files, the myRepono API creates these SQL files in your API data directory and therefore you will find them within that directory in your backups. By default the API data directory is called 'data' and is located within your myRepono API directory.

The backup SQL files are generated either using myRepono's own SQL export functions, or when supported the command-line tool 'mysqldump' is used.

Backup SQL files are split into multiple files when they exceed your maximum backup packet size which is set in your API Configuration - the SQL files are split to improve efficiency and reliability, and to make manual management of the files easier (for example, a large SQL export may exceed phpMyAdmin's maximum import filesize meaning you would need to manually split a large SQL file for import).

The database backup SQL files are the first files to be backed up, so they will always be in your first backup packet. If you are backing up enough database data then the SQL files will continue in the 2nd packet, and so fourth.

When viewing your backup you can use the search tool to search for '.sql' which will return all the backup SQL files included in your backup.

When restoring your database you can import the SQL files using a database management tool like phpMyAdmin, or you can select the SQL files using the myRepono restoration system - in both cases the database table structure and data will be automatically restored. Note, the create database syntax is included in the first SQL file packet. When restoring your SQL files, please ensure you select all the SQL files associated to the database table which you are restoring.

You can manage the databases and tables you have selected for backup using the Domains: Databases section.
